Oakview Football iPhone Photo

I watched a journalism student learn to photograph the football game today. He would ask a few questions and then walk away photographing moments the way he saw them. He would run around frantically trying to photograph what he could. At first he was trying to stand in the right place to photograph a touchdown, trying to make the photograph happen or hope that it would come. Then he started to learn that photographing what you want is not the goal. His job is to tell the story as it happened, not to make the story happen.

Fence Sitting

The fence

Another one of those photos that I store in my photo memory bank for future use. I may see something similar in the future when on a portrait shoot and I will know how to use it to my advantage.

Sunrise iPhone Photo

Another exploration in the world of the iPhone camera. I feel it helps me to focus on the two key ingredients to a great photograph. Composition and lighting. Here's a photo of the sun rising over Long Lake in Lake Orion.

Waiting for tow truck, iPhone photo opportunities

Today my car decide that the left front tire no longer needed to be attached to the vehicle. So while waiting for my tow truck to arrive, I thought it was a great opportunity to capture some photos with my iPhone.

Here's a shot of the car and the wheel slightly askew

Sebring Towed

Walking around the car, found this cool shot. I'm a big tiger fan.

This rust stain on the sidewalk made for an interesting texture. You can tell I was getting quite bored now.

While at the dealership, thought this sign was appropriate for the story

I count my blessings that I was not on the highway when this happened. Having it fall of the car while in a parking lot made me feel much happier about the whole situation.

Here's a shot from my photo walk yesterday at the Orchard Lake Nature Sanctuary. I stopped there to have lunch on my way home and found this gem of a shot.

Lake Orion vs Southfield 2009

The game began like most do in the US with the national anthem. I always sense a rivalry between the band members and the football players. It's almost like the football players have claimed this field for their sport, yet the band members claim it for their competitions. I think this photo represents that feeling the way the instruments are pointed right at the players during the national anthem.

The defense really stepped up their game this week and dominated the Southfield offense.

Every week I have a theme for when I shoot a football game. It keeps me focused on a goal and the theme for this week was celebrations. I wanted to capture those moments of celebratory bliss, and this shot is the first of many that I captured with that in mind.

A different form of celebration, more of a rub it in your face I just scored a touchdown on you celebration.

Here's our glorious defense again celebrating another successful conversion.

The dance team works just as hard as everyone else out there, so I thought they deserved some blog time as well.

Lake Orion Vs Oak Park 2009

I remember the pain the next day. The next day after a football game your body tells you in great detail how much it doesn't like what you did to it the previous evening. Football hurts the next day, but it's a good hurt. It's the kind of feeling you get when you know you worked hard. Lake Orion defeated Oak Park nicely last week with a 26 to 7 victory. I'm sure the pain on Saturday was worth every bit after such a great win. Enjoy these pictures from the game. Quarterback Release

QB Release

One of my favorite shots from the football game last friday against Hudsonville.

You may ask, "why does a wedding photographer photograph sporting events?" What could a football game possibly have that relates to weddings? The truth is, I find football games just as challenging as weddings to photograph. They both require an equal amount of attention, and they both give the opportunity to tell a story with pictures. I think the greatest part of shooting football games is that it gets me to think creatively. Some sports shoots will point the camera at the field and that's it, but there is so much more to the story than just what's between the hash marks. There are fans, players on the sideline that will never play but continue to root on their team, cheerleaders, huddles on the sidelines, player's expressions, helmets, footballs, the list is literally infinite. All of which help me to break out of my shell and to keep my creativity flowing.

If you would like to view the story that I have told with this football game, feel free to check out all of the photos here

Today I had the distinct pleasure of photographing a studio recording for an upcoming CD release. I'll let you all know when the musician is releasing the CD sometime in November.
