Cake at Poppy Seed deli in Lake Orion

I love cake and I really liked how the light was shining on this particular show cake in the Poppy Seed deli in Lake Orion. The iPhone doesn't do it justice, but you get the idea.

Long Lake Snowy Sunrise

The sunrise over long lake. I know I've taken this shot before, but there were some things about this sunrise that compelled me to capture it.

Lake Orion Ski Team

Today I had the pleasure of photographing the Lake Orion Ski team at Pine Knob. I'm not going to lie, it was cold. I was able to capture some really amazing shots. Here's one of them

Taken from the back of the church

This was another test image from the back of the church. That's right, I was in the very back of the church and this cross was at above the alter. The more amazing part of this photo is that there is no flash and I am shooting with an ISO of 4000. Yes, this is what I do for fun.

St. Joseph Catholic Church Lake Orion

I have several weddings this year in dark churches and I had the opportunity this evening to experiment with some settings while in this dark church. I was very very happy with the results of my camera and lenses. Here's a nice overall shot of the church in all it's glory.

Photo walk around my office. Sometimes a photo walk is more like a photo steps. Taken with my iPhone earlier this week.

Church Location Scouting iPhone Photo

I've been wanting to know what the light is like in this church at night time for a while now. This is the Lake Orion St. Joseph Catholic Church and it is gorgeous. Here's a humble photo of it taken with my iPhone.

Diving with style

Here's a shot of my son diving last week. The locations to shoot at the Lake Orion pool are great and it's nice to get close enough to capture the expressions on the faces.

The obvious swimming photo

Yesterday was my first opportunity to be on the deck during the swim meet.  I know this kind of photo and composition has been captured a million times before, but I had to capture it at least once.

More Foofing with the flash

Here's another foofing picture taken at ImagingUSA. This is my bride talking with our children. Notice how the light transitions across her face.

A tip from Denis Reggie

This shot was made possible by a tip I learned from Denis Reggie. He taught us some great tips about how to work with light. I learned an amazing amount from him and the first thing I wanted to test was a use of indirect light that he calls foofing. It really does work, and it makes a huge difference. I know this is just a statue, but look at how this photo has a third dimension the way the shadow goes from dark to light across the face. Thanks Denis, you changed my world in just a short time.

Eye Doctor tool

A visit to the eye doctor is no place to put the camera down.  The iPhone had to come out for this photo.

Sledding With Style

Captured these photos of my son sledding today. The ramp made for some great air time, but the landing was hard on the belly.

Indian Springs Metro Park Sunset

After Saturday's engagement session I began driving out of the Indian Springs Metro Park, and this sunset was too good to pass up. I almost got frost bite trying to capture this, but it was worth it. The first image was taken with my iPhone, and the second with my D700. Enjoy.

A wedding toast test

One reason for this blog is to get better at my photography, and this was one of those tests. I know that weddings are coming soon, and finding different angles and different ways of presenting the toast on camera is something I was thinking about when taking this photograph. I know this isn't very exciting, but to me there is a lot of things learned.

Beginning the Year with a new Challenge

Two years ago I had a great idea. I wanted to improve my photography, and the way I decided to do it was to use the camera. I know, it's a new concept. But really, I gave myself a goal because I'm goal oriented. The goal was to post a new photo every day that was taken within that week. In 2008 I was able to do that with a few exceptions. In 2009 I fell short of that goal mainly because I didn't set it for myself. 2010 is a new year and so the goal is revived and better than ever. Not sure why it's better, but you get the idea.

The first photo of this year is one taken this morning while making my world famous chocolate chip pancakes. Forget about the fact that no one in the world knows about them until now. Happy new year and thanks for following my photographic journey.
