Family Night Out

On our way home from family night out I saw this image and captured it with the only camera on me, the iPhone.  This blurry picture means a lot to me.  I love that it's blurry from the bumpy drive.  I love the range of color from the blue sky to the yellow/orange lights of the cars passing by.  I love the composition. I love the feeling I felt when I took it.

iPhone Photo Friday - Rental Car Sign

This week's iPhone Friday post is a bit of a vanity photo, but I like the perspective in this shot. When I get off the plane, the last thing I want to do is wait in a line for a rental car representative to punch a bunch of keys on the keyboard and stare at a computer terminal. I want to walk up to my car and drive away. That's exactly what I get with Avis and it's glorious. I see my name on the board and it tells me where to find my car. It's that easy and makes all the difference in the world.

Classic Shots

I thouroughly enjoy going to classic car shows and photographing other people's prized possessions. I enjoy meeting the owners and learning about the uniqueness of their vehicle and what makes it special to them. The amount of effort and attention provided to these machines is massive and requires a similar passion to that of my passion for photography. We share that love for something and I like to share my photos with the owners. It's a great give and take relationship.

Today I shot entirely in manual to get used to controlling the exposure and really get to know my camera. I used a polarizing filter to take the shadows away and allow the paint to really show it's true colors. I hope you enjoy these shots as much as I did meeting the owners of these vehicles.

iPhone Photo Friday

If you have followed my blog for a while you will know that I always carry my camera with me. I am an observer of the world around me and I see images that need to be captured all of the time. Somethings I don't bring the camera because it's a quick jaunt and I know that there won't be any shots (and I'm usually wrong, there is almost always a shot I missed.) Sometimes the best camera you have with you is the only camera you have, and this brings me to my iPhone. When all else fails I pull out this 2 megapixel gem and I get the shot. It's not always the best shot, but it captures the moment or tells the story that I was trying to tell at the time.

This brings me to this week's iPhone Photo Friday in which I am posting a photo from one of those occasions this week where I knew the camera would not be necessary. Boy was I wrong. As I drove down this tree covered dirt road I could not help but visualize an image of the car driving down this road with the trees blanketing the sky, wheels and car hugging the road, and the motion blur of the dirt beneath. I risked the health of said iPhone and held it outside the car with no safety strap (I know, not very smart of me,) and I got the shot. Not only did I get the shot, but the sun was setting and the image was much warmer than I anticipated. That golden hue on the trees and the road is not photoshopped so I was very pleased with the result.

Another photo for my car butts series. This one courtesy of they Lake Orion Police department, and taken at this year's flower fair. This vintage car most likely pulled over many vacationers that were disobeying the speed limits in the land where living is a vacation.

Why don't the auto manufacturers put hood orniments on the fronts of cars any more? This is the front of a Belair (not sure the year.) The clouds acted as a natural softbox for this shot and I think the range of shadows really add to the shot.

My wife took this shot while I was driving. I asked her to put the camera in wide angle mode (18mm) and take a shot so that the camera captures the hood of the car.

I was having a very bad day. Nothing terrible, just low amount of sleep coupled with a motivation to be on vacation instead of work. I went outside to take a deep breath and suck it up only to see my car in the parking lot lacking air in one of the critical pieces of equipment that allows the car to move forward. The camera was in the trunk of my car along with the spare doughnut tire, so I too this shot of my flat tire.

Discount Tire to the rescue! I took the tire to my local Discount Tire location where I purchased the tire. They analyzed my tire (and another one that had a slow leak) and told me they both were not repairable because the puncture was in the side wall. Ugh. Immediately I went into pain mode of the thought of purchasing two new tires, but then he informed me that the tires were under warranty and would be replaced at no cost. Really???? Just when you think you can't take any more something picks you up and makes it OK.

Car Butts Series Begins

GTO

I'm going "Up North" for the week and wanted to post a series while I am gone. This is the first of that series titled "Car Butts." Some of the shots are not car butts at all, but car fronts. I took these shots in Lake Orion at the Pontiac Dealership yesterday. Each and every car had it's own story to tell and I really enjoyed talking with all of the proud owners.
