Improving

I suck, but Improving

Day 23 of 365
I constantly tell myself that I suck. Maybe that's something that keeps me going and keeps me improving on this craft. Maybe I don't really suck, but I just think it because there is always something I could have done better. Whatever it is, I am improving.

High Five Friday Day 7 of 365

The kids at the bus stop reminded me that it was High five Friday, so we had high fives all around. I used it as an opportunity to practice my off camera hand held flash technique.

Flash camera right 1/64 power

I chose to try a hand holding technique that I learned from a book. It's a method of having off camera flash while hand holding. My right hand holds the camera and presses the trigger while my left hand holds the flash. The thing that makes this technique interesting is that my left arm is wrapped under the camera to give the camera stability. I looked a little like a pretzel when taking the picture, but I think the off camera results are worth it. So if you see me at a wedding wrapping my arms around myself you will know why.

Light Saber Before The Light

EJP_3561-2

Day 3 of 365
ISO: 250
Aperture: F4
Shutter: 1/250s
70mm

My son was playing with a 3 point lighting system for taking video and I thought I would capture this photo of my Son.  The wooden light saber will soon become a glowing light in post production for the video.  It's exciting to see my son work so hard on his passion for being a director.

The girl that empties my wallet

Day 2 of 365  1-2-11
ISO: 250
Aperture: F2.8
60mm
Shutter Speed: 1/250s

This was a quick experiment in looking for light.  At first we were on the porch and my daughter's back was to the sun.  The light was not falling on her face enough to make it clear and the shadows were too much.  We moved out to the middle of the yard and had her face lit from the sun on her right.  Then I looked for the background to find something dark to frame around her.  The green bush was perfect and I think this shot turned out well.  I shot it wide open at f2.8 so I had to make sure my focus point was on her eyes.  If the eyes are not sharp, then the rest of the picture is useless.

365 Project 1-1-11

Today I begin a 365 project.  A new photo posted every day in order to help improve my photography.  Sometimes it will be a camera phone picture, and other times it will be taken with my wedding camera.  This journey of photography never ends and there are always things to learn, and this project is my next step to adding value to myself, my art, my clients, and my life.  Join me on this adventure and feel free to leave a comment, I could use your encouragement on this journey.  If you have a 365 project please let me know and I'll be sure to follow and offer encouragement to you as well.

Today's image begins with a macro shot.  Notice that it looks blurry on the sides but it's clear in the middle.  I had heard about a technique for taking a macro shot with a 50mm lens and wanted to give it a try.  The idea is that you take the lens off the camera and flip it around on order to change the focal distance of the lens.  Give it a try.
