Car Butts Series Begins

I'm going "Up North" for the week and wanted to post a series while I am gone. This is the first of that series titled "Car Butts." Some of the shots are not car butts at all, but car fronts. I took these shots in Lake Orion at the Pontiac Dealership yesterday. Each and every car had it's own story to tell and I really enjoyed talking with all of the proud owners. This shot was taken while driving on I696 near Detroit. I took a chance and took a shot while going through this lighted tunnel. Usually these shots don't come out because you're driving, not looking through the viewvinder, and not focusing. This image was too amazing when i saw it on the computer. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Another play on words here with this title, and I really love this shot. Holding his sister's hand was out of the question, but walking with Mom and Dad was easy to do.

Today was an experimental day of photography for me. I tried a lot of things and experimented with light, shadows, objects, colors, and framing. None of the images were worthy of posting on my blog, but I gained a whole lot of experience. Instead of posting nothing, I thought I would share with you this shot taken on my recent trip to Charlotte North Carolina. This building was in the downtown area and if anyone knows the name of it, please let me know.

Update: This is the Hearst Tower located at 214 North Tryon Street in the heart of downtown. It's the second tallest building in downtown Charlotte at the height of 200.9 meters. Read more at the Sky Scraper Page

Seems like most of my shots are taken at sunset these days, mainly because I'm currently a natural light photographer (That's another way of saying that I don't have an external flash.) I really enjoy the challenge of using available light to it's fullest, and here was one example of that. The sun was setting and the shadows from this fence were really great.

Wink and a Smile

Today's portrait session with Will and Catherine was really terrific. Capturing two youngsters on camera is quite a challenge because they do what they want to do. Sometimes you can convince them to pose for gummy bears, but for the most part they call the shots. After reviewing today's shoot I'm extremely happy with the results.

Here's one of my favorites of Will from today. He has the most infectious laugh, it just took a few minutes for him to warm up after his nap.

I think the pink Crocks really sell this shot. This girl was practicing here skateboarding skills when I grabbed this shot. I had to lay down on the cement to get the angle, but it really works well.

I took this photo just one week ago, so it fits my blog rules of taken within the week. I took this at about 7am while on a drive and it was one of those moments where I had to stop the car and get out the trusty Nikon D80. The sun was hitting the dock with some really warm light and the morning fog was just hovering over the pond.

I took this shot because of the simplicity and the richness of color. This is the window of an out of commission caboose located at Heritage Park in Taylor Michigan.

The current photo assignment that Kevin of Kevin's Photography and I have been working on is "door knob." In order to capture this photo assignment I took the classic route and found all kinds of door knobs from the front of a church, the door to a caboose, but I kept coming back to this shot of the door to a log cabin. This is the door to a log cabin that was built in 1850 and home to Andrew and Elizabeth Strong and their Children (hence the "Strong" Door.) Let me know what you think.

Tracks From My Youth

I grew up relatively near these tracks and every time I passed by them I felt like they needed to be captured on film. I think having an eye for images for me goes way back to the days as a kid when I would see these train tracks and wish I had a camera. I was traveling in Taylor this week and passed by them again, only this time I had the camera on me. The way the tracks go on to infinity really captivates me and makes me wonder what is down the line. I hope you enjoy this shot because it means more to me than just a picture, it reminds me of my youth and the origins of my passion for photography.

There I was minding my own business and this balloon appears out of no-where. Ok, I could here the thing coming, but it was low to the water and making it's rounds near the city and lakes. The colors were amazing and the sky was completely clear of clouds.

These shots were taken during this year's fireworks display. I used the 70-210mm lens zoomed in quite a bit to take these shots. My tripod was my friend during this shoot and it made for some spectacular affects behind the lens. I left the shutter open for 2 seconds for these shots allowing enough time to capture all of the aspects of the fireworks.

I really like how the sun beams shine toward the windmill in this shot. The sky and clouds were just wonderful on this day making this shot even more spectacular. This windmill provides electricity for the Horrocks Farm Market in Lansing Michigan.

I traveled quite a bit this past week and this windmill was a part of those travels. I like how the sunset hits the windmill blades giving off a golden hue. My 70-210mm lens came in handy for this shot allowing me to bring focus on just the rays of the mill.

I did a lot of traveling this week and this Rambler was seen on the side of the road. I used my 50mm lens with a polarizing filter and an wide open aperture of F3.5 to get this look. This is the hood ornament of a Rambler, though I'm not sure this was the stock paint job.

I call this one Buttery Bently because of how buttery the 50mm lens at F3.2 makes the ornament look. If you look closely you can see my reflection down below. I used a polarizing filter to reduce some of the reflection in the hood of the car. This shot was also taken near sunset which is commonly called the Power Hour.
